Terms of Service

The short version: you give us one photo, we make your child the hero of one of our books, and we try hard to be fair when anything goes wrong.

What you're buying

A personalized, AI-illustrated picture book: one of our stories, with your child drawn in from the photo you provide and the name and dedication you type. Illustrations are an artistic likeness of your child (a storybook character drawn from their photo), not a photographic reproduction. You see and approve their character before any page is drawn. After you order, we draw every page and email you to check the whole book: you can approve it or ask us to redraw pages. If we don't hear from you within 14 days of that email (5 days if it's ready between November 15 and December 20), we print it as approved. For a gift, the child's parent adds the photo and does the checking. A hardcover order also includes the book as a digital download.

Your content

You must own or have permission to use the photos you upload, and you confirm you are the child's parent or guardian (or acting with their consent). We decline names or dedications that fall outside what a children's book can print. If we decline yours in error, email hello@keptalebooks.com and we'll take another look.

Printing, delivery — and our guarantee

Printed books are made to order by our print partner, Lulu, who says printing usually takes 3–5 business days, and longer in the holiday rush. We ship to Canada and the United States. Delivery after that depends on where you are and on the post, so we can't promise a date. Because every book is personalized, we can't resell a returned copy — so instead of a returns policy, we offer something simpler:

If the printed book disappoints you, we'll reprint it or refund it. Full stop. Damaged in the mail, a misprint, an artwork defect we missed, or it just isn't what you hoped — email us at hello@keptalebooks.com within 30 days of delivery and we'll make it right. (For quality issues, a photo helps us fix the root cause; for anything else, just tell us.)

The reprint guarantee. Specifically, we guarantee that your child is the same child on every page. Every page is checked against the character you approved before it is printed. If a page does not show that same child, tell us within 30 days of delivery and we will redraw the page and reprint the whole book at our cost — you do not send anything back, and there is no charge. This guarantee covers consistency of your child across the pages of the book; it is not a promise about how closely an illustration resembles a particular photograph, which is a matter of taste rather than something we can measure.

Payment

Payments are processed by Stripe. Keptale is made by 12Apps, so your card statement will show 12APPS.IO. Prices include shipping.

Ownership

The finished book is yours to enjoy, gift, and share. Keptale retains rights in its illustration styles, story engine, and brand.

The boring-but-necessary part

Service is provided as-is; our total liability is capped at the amount you paid. We may update these terms; material changes will be posted here with a new date.
